Pruning olive trees is a balance of art, lore and science

TORRETTA, Sicily (AP) — Watching Giovanni Caruso prune an olive tree is like observing a mountain climber decide how to reach the next hand-grip in a cliff. He chooses his path with deliberation. He even wears a helmet.

With a set of newfangled tools and theories, this 35-year-old Sicilian biologist and self-made pruning expert is working on his first commercial project to introduce the central Italian technique known as the “polyconic vase” into Sicily’s often remote and overgrown olive groves. This method seeks to sculpt a tree into separate cone-shaped sides, thus producing more olives that are easier to pick.

“The cone’s geometric shape allows the most branches to be exposed to the sun,” Caruso said.

Trees and shrubs are now emerging from their dormant winter state and may require attention before the growing season gets into full swing.

However, done improperly, trimming and pruning can result in the disfigurement and premature death of an otherwise healthy tree. Hardwoods like oak, hickory and sugar maple should be minimally pruned, if at all. Any tall-growing tree, including tulip and sycamore, should not be planted near roads, sewer lines, sidewalks, buildings or power lines. Choosing the right tree for the right space can eliminate or reduce costly remedies later.

New Year's resolutions for your trees

by Eric Hoyer, RCA #482

As I do at the beginning of each year, I ask my readers to make New Year’s resolutions regarding their trees. Some of these are redundant from previous years, but I believe they are important enough to repeat, particularly number one below.

1. I resolve not to murder my crape myrtle. I realize I put this in last year’s article, but continued crape myrtle abuse warrants my repetition. I continually see crape myrtles cut back to six or eight feet in height with nothing but a trunk and stubs for limbs. I don’t get it. Why would you do that to a perfectly good tree?
