Industry News: Leaf, Seed, and Flower Concerns

Q: My evergreen of 70 yrs is showing white pine cones. Is my tree sick?

A: Conifer cones would most likely appear white from being coated with crystallized resin. The presence of resin may be from insects feeding on the cones or nearby branches or needles. The resin may also be the result of attack by a fungal disease. If you can reach them to get a sample, then your local Cornell Cooperative Extension office may be able to diagnose them for you. if they are out of your reach, you should consider having the tree examined by a local arborist.
