Q: Tree looks like it's vomiting--What's wrong with it?

Q: I have a Japanese snowbell that is dripping, oozing, and vomiting from many places. There is white foam, wet yellow beads, orange pudding, and slime running out of it. It is truly gross and actually heartbreaking to look at. Please help identify and tell us if there is something we can do.

   

 

A: This looks like a wetwood infection, a bacterial infection of the sapwood of trees. It typically enters the tree through wounds or weak branch unions as in your tree. It can be unsightly and often smells like stale beer. For more information, see these websites:
