Industry News: Root and Soil Concerns

Q: What is this white, spider web-like substance on top of mulch?

Q: I have three crape myrtle trees in my backyard with mulch surrounding them. One of these trees has an area in the mulch that has a white, spider web-like substance. We have had rain recently--could this be mold? Should I remove this film? Is it a potential disease source for my tree? The tree is a  year old and appears healthy. Needless to say, I'm concerned. Thank you.

A: Yes, this white, film-like substance is mold. It is a fungus that is often seen on the surface of mulch. It is not of concern for the health of your crape.
