Q: Mysterious piles of twigs--What could be the cause?

Friday, May 6, 2016

Q: We have a mature ash tree, and every couple of weeks, we find a pile of twigs, about 1-2 feet long, beneath it.At first we thought they were dead branches, but today I found a bunch with spring leaves on them. They are concentrated in an area of about 6-feet in diameter. We have found them under the tree in different spots. What could be causing this?

A: Most likely, the damage is caused by squirrels gathering materials to make a nest.
