Ask a Consulting Arborist Q&A: Bark and Trunk Concerns

Q: Cypress grew 1 inch around a wire and hose. Should the tree be spliced to keep from breaking?

Q: We staked our bald cypress with wire running through a garden hose. Not paying enough attention, the tree started growing into the hose. The tree now has about a 1-inch indentation 3 feet from the ground. Is there any way to splice the tree to keep it from breaking in the wind? The tree is about 12 inches around in that spot.

A: Considering the size of the indentation compared to the diameter of the trunk, it seems like there should be no problem that needs fixing. As long as you have removed the hose and wire without penetrating through the bark, the tree will repair itself over time.
