Q: I have a commercial property in San Diego that has a bunch of trees that appear to be dead. The original building plans said they were Podacarpus Gracilor (fern pines), but every picture of a fern pine shows a luscious green tree. My trees have a few dead leaves and don't appear to be getting green anytime soon. Here are a few pictures. Can you tell me what type of tree they are? If they are dead, I will need to get them replaced. Thanks.
A: Those trees in the photos are not fern pines but appear to be sycamore trees. I cannot be sure of what species from the photos, but they are typically dormant at this time of year. if they don't leaf out in a few weeks to months then you may have a problem. I would suggest that you call an ASCA member or an ASCA Registered Consulting Arborist® in your area to confirm identification, establish their health status, and give you appropriate recommendations for their care.
