Ask a Consulting Arborist Q&A: Tree Planting Tips and Species Recommendations

Q: Which trees are tolerant of black walnut toxicity?

Wednesday, January 20, 2016

Q: I removed 6 black walnut trees from my lawn and would like to plant a new species that will be tolerant of the poison the black walnut trees put out. Can you recommend a species?

A: Juglone, the toxic substance released in the soil, can persist for several years. Your best bet is to plant resistant species in the area. Take a look at this website which explains juglone toxicity and provides a list of resistant species.
