Q: What boring insect throws out sawdust?

Monday, January 4, 2016

Q: We have a boring insect, but we don't know which one because it is pretty far up the tree. There is a hole in the tree, and whatever it is keeps throwing out sawdust, and our leaves are all spotted. Is there anything we can do about this.

A: There is one boring insect that routinely "throws out sawdust"—carpenter ants. The spots on the leaves could be aphids or scale releasing honeydew. These two insects are often found in the same tree. You should retain an ISA Certified Arborist with a pesticide license to diagnosis and prescribe control measures.
