Q: My dog runs around the maple in the backyard and now some roots are exposed due to displaced soil. Should the roots be re-covered with new soil?

A: Maples are very shallow rooted trees. The exposed roots are not a big deal and do not need to be covered up with dirt. I would, however, recommend mulching the area if possible to reduce the possibility of the dog's paws physically damaging the exposed roots by scratching the bark off of them.
