Q: Are carrotwood tree seeds poisonous to dogs? There's no information online.

Q: I am located in Los Angeles, California. I'm wondering if carrotwood tree seeds are poisonous to dogs. When I look online, I only find information on how to take care of the tree. I just want to know if my dog will get sick from eating them. Thank you for your help!

A: The Cupaniopsis anacardiodes (aka "carrotwood" tree) is probably not poisonous to dogs; however, I cannot say this for certain. I have four reference books on poisonous plants of California and of North America, and that species of tree does not appear in any of those references. But, we can never be certain that a plant is NOT poisonous until it has been tested in a laboratory. I would also assume if your dog ate enough of them, it might get ill, even if not "technically poisonous."
